They accuse Freddy Guevara of treason and other crimes: he will remain detained at the Helicoide

(CNN Spanish) – A Caracas court confirmed this Thursday, after a hearing that ended at dawn, that the Venezuelan opposition leader Freddy Guevara must remain in detention and be transferred to Helicoide. The decision comes after another judge indicted him for treason, terrorist financing and criminal association, according to Guevara’s defense informed CNN.

CNN contacted the Public Ministry for details, but has not received a response so far.

Lawyers and relatives of Freddy Guevara denounce irregularities in the detention

Both the lawyers and the relatives of Guevara, leader and founder of the Voluntad Popular party, denounce that the presentation hearing was held more than 55 hours after the arrest, despite the fact that Venezuelan law establishes that it must be held in the first 48 hours.

In addition, they warn that the detainee has not been allowed access to his legal representatives or his relatives, and that they were not informed where he was being held. They affirm that, although they have visited different headquarters of the security agencies, they deny that he is in the place.

In his Twitter account, Voluntad Popular assures that “the dictatorship intends to incriminate him in crimes that he has never committed to justify the new wave of persecution” against the party.

Guevara, former vice president of the National Assembly of Venezuela, was arrested this Monday by the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin), according to a statement from the Attorney General’s Office, accused of “crimes of terrorism, attack against constitutional order, conspiracy to commit a crime and treason “.

Without indicating what evidence exists, the Public Ministry says that Guevara is linked “to extremist and paramilitary groups associated with the Colombian government.”

At the time when intelligence officials surrounded the vehicle in which he was traveling, Guevara broadcast live on his social networks indicating that they were about to stop him. The opponent said: “To the international community, make it very clear, well, that if we do not understand that with this type of regimes it is necessary to act with great forcefulness, this type of thing will continue to happen.” He added that he hoped it would be brief.

Cross accusations

The vice president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, on Saturday accused Guevara and also the opposition leader Juan Guaidó of being linked to the acts of violence committed by criminal gangs in the southwest of the capital, which were the target of a security operation since Thursday. .

Both the lawyers and the relatives of Guevara deny the allegations against him.

Guaidó responded to these accusations through his Twitter account. He assured that “what the regime intends to do with the case of Cota 905 is a repeated novel, one more show in which they are going to blame the democratic alternative.”

On the other hand, the father of the detained opponent, also named Freddy Guevara, assured that his son came to believe that they would not dare to arrest him because they were in a negotiation process. He emphasizes that on Sunday he even met with the delegation of the European Union that is visiting the country, evaluating the conditions to send an observation mission to the elections of governors and mayors scheduled for November 21. He assured that they knew the risk that Guevara was running, but that they decided “to respect his right, his love for Venezuela and his solidarity” with Guaidó.
