Binx, a cat that lived in the condo in Miami was found near the site of the collapse and was reunited with its owners, says the mayor

(CNN) – Binx, a cat who lived on the ninth floor of the Champlain Towers South condo, was reunited with his owners Friday after volunteers found him near the site of the collapse, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava reported in a press conference.

“After 16 long and extremely difficult days, I am happy to share a little good news,” the mayor said Friday night.

Levine Cava said there are people who feed the cats in and around the collapse site and one of the volunteers thought they recognized the cat and took it to an animal shelter “where it was positively identified” as belonging to one of the families in building.

The mayor did not identify the family to which the cat belongs.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart and to all of us who are so happy to have played a role in bringing Binx back to his family,” said Levine Cava.

“I am happy that this little miracle brings some light to the life of a family today hurt and provides a light of hope for our entire community in the midst of this terrible tragedy,” he added.

When asked by a reporter where the cat was found, the mayor said Binx was “in the vicinity” of the site.

“There are a lot of cats in the area, and we’ve been sending our Animal Services Department with traps to find cats, and we’ve also supported those who volunteer to feed the cats,” he stated.

The death toll in the condo collapse now stands at 86, the mayor said at Friday’s briefing, and of those, 62 victims have been identified. Currently, 43 people are potentially missing, he added.
