The President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, has called on the Member States of the European Union to deliver arms rapidly to Ukraine. In an interview with the German weekly Bild am Sonntag, she also stated that Russia’s state bankruptcy is only a matter of time. “For all member states, whoever can should deliver quickly,” von der Leyen said on the subject of arms supplies to Ukraine. “Because only then can Ukraine succeed in its fight against Russia,” she added. The President of the European Commission also stated that, over time, Western sanctions are increasingly affecting the Russian economy. “According to the current forecast, Russia’s gross domestic product will fall by 11 percent. Russia’s state bankruptcy is only a matter of time. With this war, Putin is also destroying his own country and the future of his people,” she added. The European Union last week adopted a fifth package of sanctions against Russia, under which, among other things, it will completely ban Russian coal imports from August. According to von der Leyen, the EC is dealing with energy issues and the banking sector, in particular the largest Russian banking company Sberbank, in the preparation of another package of sanctions. “The ultimate goal is to reduce Putin’s revenue. But oil is traded globally. We do not want Putin to sell supplies to other EU markets at even higher prices. Therefore, we are now creating smart mechanisms to include oil in further sanctions. , “said the head of the EC. Von der Leyen also said that Ukraine was able to win the war with Russia. “Ukraine’s bravery and resilience is impressive,” she said. She also praised President Volodymyr Zelenský for the way he runs his country during the war. However, she warned that the war could continue for a long time. “We must do everything to end it as quickly as possible. At the same time, we must prepare for the fact that, in the worst case, this war could last for months or even years,” she warned. Von der Leyen visited Kiev this month, where she met Zelenysky. “Peaceful, strong leader, very knowledgeable,” she told the Ukrainian president. “This visit has strengthened my determination to side with Ukraine and to do everything in its power to defend itself against this brutal and unjustifiable Russian aggression,” she added.
