Frozen fries: which brands contain the least amount of additives and superfluous ingredients? – West France

The magazine 60 million consumers conducted a study analyzing the composition of frozen fries, the ingredients of which vary greatly from one bag to another. Nine packages were sifted through: one major brand: McCain and eight distributor brands: Aldi, Auchan, Carrefour, Casino, E.Leclerc, Intermarché, Lidl and Picard. Lidl fries at the top of the basket The results of the study showed that Lidl’s ‘Harvest Basket’ oven fries are the simplest with only two ingredients: potatoes and sunflower oil. They are closely followed by Picard fries, with three ingredients. These Lidl fries are also those with the largest proportion of potatoes: 96% while being one of the three cheapest products (€1.29/kg). Conversely, other brands use unsuspected products such as wheat or rice flour, modified starch, pea fiber, dextrose and dextrin… And these are Auchan fries who win the prize with 14 ingredients. Problematic ingredients In addition to these ultra-transformation markers pointed out by the magazine, some sachets mention additives such as diphosphates (E450). Used as texture agents to obtain a more attractive product, they could play a role in triggering cardiovascular diseases. McCain, for example, uses this kind of additives. Finally, 60 million consumers say that from one brand to another, the sodium content goes from simple to fourfold. Except for Lidl fries, added sugar is also present in all brands, which can lead, in the event of overconsumption, to pathologies such as diabetes, obesity or even cardiovascular disorders.
