Food was more expensive year-on-year in all nine monitored food items. According to the office, the most significant prices rose for bread and cereals by 14 percent, milk, cheese and eggs by 12.1 percent and oils and fats by 26 percent, but also vegetables by 24.7 percent and meat by 6.4 percent. From soft drinks, we paid more for coffee, tea and cocoa, as well as for mineral water, soft drinks and juices. Food, including soft drinks, is the second most important item in Slovak household expenditure. Housing and energy account for the largest share of Slovak household expenditure. In March, price growth reached 14.4 percent, while households paid extra not only for energy or rent, but also for services. According to the Office, the impact of price adjustments within regulated network industries from January is still evident in energy, in March the impact of the increase in heat energy prices by 15.1 percent and for solid fuels by 12.4 percent was added. The continuing rise in the prices of building materials in the consumer basket continues to increase the prices of imputed rents, reaching a growth of 17.4 percent in March, which was the highest value this year. (+ tables) In March, fuels were 27.9 percent more expensive year-on-year, tobacco 5.7% more expensive and the prices of individual types of alcoholic beverages also increased. The year-on-year rise in prices is also reflected in the prices of various services. From July 2019, prices for postal services were adjusted for the first time in March, so they were 17.6 percent higher year-on-year. Consumers paid more, for example, for outpatient services by 6.3 percent, financial services by 7.8 percent, and in hairdressing and beauty salons by 11.1 percent.
