Magnitude 5.9 quake shakes remote area south of Lake Tahoe, between California and Nevada

(CNN Spanish) – A strong earthquake shook the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains south of Lake Tahoe, causing tremors to be felt throughout northern California and northern Nevada.

The earthquake that struck at 3:49 p.m. in the Pacific was initially reported as a 6.2 magnitude, but the United States Geological Survey quickly revised it to 5.9.

The National Weather Service in Sacramento reported feeling mild tremors lasting about a minute, shaking the building and moving the blinds. Others reported feeling the earthquake in San Francisco, nearly 250 miles (402 km) west of the epicenter.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries, officials with the California Office of Emergency Management (Cal OES) said in a tweet.

Several aftershocks have been recorded, measuring in the magnitude 3 and 4 range.

“We are working closely with local officials to make sure they have the resources and support to respond quickly to these earthquakes,” Cal OES said.
