Finland discusses NATO membership, Russia strengthens military at the border

Finland’s journey to apply for NATO membership begins today. An event unthinkable until last year, as the Secretary General for Foreign Affairs Matti Anttonen had already said in a press meeting at the Finnish embassy not even two weeks ago. It is a development that follows the change of opinion in the majority of the population after the start of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and which could soon affect Sweden as well. The introductory talks are expected in a week. Meanwhile, today the Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin will meet his Swedish counterpart Magdalena Andersson, in a confrontation that will have as its main theme membership of NATO. Meanwhile, Moscow has decided to strengthen the military group on the border with Finland, denying that the latter’s entry poses a threat to Russia’s security.
