Huge 1,174-carat diamond discovered in Botswana

(CNN) – A huge 1,174-carat diamond was discovered in Botswana, according to a mining company; It is the second huge diamond to be found in the country in a few weeks.

The rare rock was recovered at the Karowe diamond mine last month and presented to the government at a ceremony on Wednesday.

It is the third diamond of more than 1,000 carats found in the deposit, and will now become “valuable collections of polished diamonds of the best color,” according to the Canadian mining company Lucara Diamond in a press release.

Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi attended a ceremony to view the stone on Wednesday.

Naseem Lahri, CEO of Lucara Botswana, said his find “is a historic event, both for us and for Botswana.”

The stone is “a variable quality cleavage gem with significant domains of high quality white gem material,” Lucara said in the press release.

In 2019, the firm discovered what is believed to be the second largest diamond in history, a staggering 1,758 carat stone, at the Karowe Mine.

Today, the largest diamond ever recorded is the 3,106-carat Cullinan Diamond, found in South Africa in 1905. The Cullinan was later cut into smaller stones, some of which are part of the crown jewels of the royal family. British.
