The 2021 American Rescue Plan, which helped ease economic pressure on the US amid the pandemic, provided advance payments of up to 50% of the child tax credit to eligible taxpayers, according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). “If you received advance payments, you can claim the rest of the child tax credit, if eligible, when you file your taxes” this year, adds the IRS. So, if you’re eligible and received child tax credit advance payments in 2021, you can receive the rest of the credit you missed last year for pandemic relief. It can be the remaining 50% or even more, depending on how much you have received. To get the remaining credit, the IRS says you “must reconcile (compare) the total you received (in 2021) to the amount you can claim” on your 2022 tax return.
