But these sequences, viewed more than 5 million times, have been taken out of context. Other images of this same event explain the behavior of the American president. The audit in briefOn April 5, for the anniversary of the entry into force of the Affordable Care Act, Joe Biden received Barack Obama at the White House. On social networks, several pro-republican English-speaking accounts, but also far-right French-speaking accounts, shared two sequences shot during this event. According to them, they would show that Joe Biden was “lonely and disoriented” and that he would have presented himself in his speech as the “vice-president of Barack Obama”. In reality, these sequences were taken out of context. The event was filmed in its entirety and these images show Joe Biden interacting with the other participants. If he did introduce himself as the “vice president”, it was in response to a joke uttered a few minutes earlier by Barack Obama. The detail of the verification “No one wants to talk to Joe Biden”, “listen what he says, he has really lost his mind!”… Since April 5, two videos of Joe Biden have been shared by pro-republican English-language accounts, but also far-right French-language accounts, such as that of the MEP Gilbert Collard. According to them, these images seen more than five million times would show a “disoriented” Joe Biden, sidelined by the other participants, and who would have gone so far as to present himself as the “vice-president of Barack Obama ”, a position he held from 2009 to 2017. But these sequences have been taken out of context. The full video of this event organized on April 5 at the White House proves that the President of the United States discussed at length with the various guests, and that his “lapsus” was in fact a joke addressed to Barack Obama. The first sequence was shared by the pro-Republican account @RNCResearch then taken up by far-right French-speaking accounts. It was filmed on April 5 at the White House during the reception of Barack Obama, invited by Joe Biden to celebrate the anniversary and the strengthening of the Affordable Care Act (or “Obamacare”), which came into force in March 2010 This thirteen-second video shows Joe Biden being left out of the way of the other guests. According to these accounts, she would prove that “no one wanted to talk” to the current president of the United States who would have appeared “disoriented” and even “senile”. To verify these images, we found thanks to the keywords “Biden Obama” a video of the entire event. It was published on YouTube on April 6 by British media The Independent. But this video shows a very different reality. We find there, in the 39th minute, the diverted sequence. Far from being left out, Joe Biden first greets a group of guests before walking away from them for a few seconds. He then quickly joins a woman present in the same room, then returns to introduce her to these same guests. The President of the United States was therefore not left out. This video of the entire event was posted on April 6 on The Independent’s Youtube channel. Joe Biden’s False SlipThe second sequence is taken from the same event. A few minutes before interacting with the guests, Joe Biden began his speech with the phrase: “My name is Joe Biden, I am Barack Obama’s vice-president and Jill Biden’s husband”. On social networks, Twitter accounts published this footage suggesting that it was a slip and that Joe Biden had “lost his mind”. Screenshot of one of the tweets presenting this sentence from Joe Biden as a slip. This passage was also badly transcribed since the President of the United States presented himself as the husband of Jill Biden and not of “Joe Bien” 08/04/22. © Observers In reality, this sentence is not a slip. In the 8th minute of The Independent video, Barack Obama begins his speech with: “Thank you to Vice President Joe Biden”. This sentence elicits laughter and applause from those present in the room, including those of Kamala Harris, the current Vice President of the United States, and Joe Biden. Barack Obama then explains “It was a joke. Everything was prepared”, and approaches the President of the United States to laugh with him. This video of the entire event was posted on April 6 on The Independent’s Youtube channel. Several minutes later, Joe Biden therefore begins his speech with the sentence: “My name is Joe Biden, I am Barack Obama’s vice-president and Jill Biden’s husband”. This is clearly a joke in reference to that of Barack Obama, which also arouses laughter and applause. Joe Biden then continues: “Mr. President, welcome back to the White House! It feels like the good old days.” This video of the entire event was posted on April 6 on The Independent’s Youtube channel. This exchange was reported by several media, including the French daily 20 minutes. The event was Barack Obama’s first visit to the White House since Joe Biden was elected. In an interview, the two men joked about this moment which reminded them of the time during which, from 2009 to 2016, Joe Biden was Barack Obama’s vice-president. The current President of the United States, for example, explained that, during their lunch, “we no longer knew who should sit where”.
