The Hungarian parliamentary elections were expected to be fought hard by Fidesz and the combined opposition, which, according to most experts, had a real chance to defeat Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz for the first time since 2010. Surveys a few weeks before the election showed a slight dominance of the ruling party, but shortly before April 3, Fidesz’s lead began to grow significantly. According to a Medián poll published on March 30, Fidesz already had a lead of 10 percentage points over the combined opposition among eligible voters. However, no one expected Viktor Orbán to defeat the opposition as hard as it eventually happened. Only debris remains from the opposition, and Fidesz is stronger than before the election. He won the constitutional majority for the fourth time in a row, which is also strong enough. Of the 199 deputies, Fidesz will have 135 (he needs 133 for a constitutional majority), and a member of the German minority who voted with Fidesz in the previous parliamentary term has also entered parliament. The far-right Mi Hazánk (Our Country) movement, against which Fidesz did not campaign, will also have seven deputies and which is regularly given space in the Fideszák, otherwise very strictly controlled media. The combined six-party opposition called In Unity for Hungary suffered a devastating defeat, and signs of the coalition’s collapse were already evident during election night. Its leader, Péter Márki-Zay, has not been able to win in his one-member constituency in Hódmezővásárhely, where he is mayor and where he defeated candidate Fidesza four years ago.
