While the Les Républicains party decided to wait before launching a possible primary procedure, and Christian Jacob called the possible candidates “to responsibility”, Xavier Bertrand said on Tuesday that he would “not be a candidate for a primary “from the right.

Xavier Bertrand, president of the Hauts-de-France region and presidential candidate, said Tuesday, July 6, that he would “not be a candidate for a primary” from the right to nominate his candidate.

“I want to bring together the talents of the right” but “it will be necessary to gather more widely”, he declared on TF1 after the call “to the responsibility” of the number one of LR Christian Jacob and the platform of several contenders, including Valérie Pécresse and Laurent Wauquiez, to the organization of an “open primary” of the right for 2022.

“In consistency, I will not be a candidate for a primary”

On the strength of his re-election at the head of the Hauts-de-France region, Xavier Bertrand reiterated that he would be a candidate for the 2022 presidential election without submitting to a possible open primary, for which his potential rivals such as Valérie Pécresse plead, on the other hand. and Laurent Wauquiez, also re-elected to the presidency of Île-de-France and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes respectively.

“Tonight, in front of the French, I am a candidate for the presidential election,” he said, referring to “a candidacy of consistency with (his) conception of the presidential election (which) is a meeting between a man , a woman and the French “.

“In consistency, I will not be a candidate for a primary,” insisted Xavier Bertrand, also judging that the primary organized in 2016 before the previous presidential election, during which the right-wing candidate François Fillon did not qualify for the second round had been “a source of divisions”.

The Republicans party has indeed decided to wait before launching a possible primary procedure to nominate its candidate for the 2022 presidential election in France, asking potential candidates from the right and the center to have “the meaning of responsibilities “and come together.

The training plans to nominate its candidate in November and is given until September 25, the date on which a congress will be organized, to determine the modalities of its choice.

“I ask them (…) to have a sense of responsibility and to ensure that they are able to come together”, LR president Christian Jacob told reporters after an office. party policy. “If we do not arrive at this gathering, I asked (…) to prepare a process of gathering”, he continued, a job entrusted to the mayor of Antibes, Jean Leonetti, the “Mr. Primary “of the party, whose conclusions would then be submitted to a vote of the militants during the congress of September 25.

“I hope that we arrive at the union without that but if we do not succeed, we are not naive, we will prepare this process of gathering which will allow us in November to nominate our candidate”, added the president LR.

At the end of LR’s political office, Christian Jacob also announced the sidelining of the number two of the party, Guillaume Peltier, replaced as deputy vice-president by Annie Genevard, member of the Doubs.

Christian Jacob explained this dismissal by a “point of disagreement” with Guillaume Peltier and by the need to “play collectively” and to respect “the line” of the party.

Guillaume Peltier in particular said he was ready, at the end of May, to work with Robert Ménard, close to the RN, within the framework of a “great government of recovery and national union”.
