Chernobyl, “Russians ignore radiation protection regulations and control procedures”

According to the Ukrainian regulatory authority (Snriu), the Russian military continues to ignore the radiation protection regulations and access control procedures in the plants and in the Chernobyl exclusion zone, causing a deterioration of the local radiological situation. The Isin (Inspectorate for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection) makes it known to AdnKronos, and it is not the only critical element. The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone Management Agency (Dazv) has indeed communicated that one of its laboratories has been looted and its equipment stolen, although the International Atomic Energy Agency has assessed that the event does not pose a significant radiological risk. With regard to the fires that occurred in the last few days in the “exclusion zone” around the Chernobyl power plant, ISIN, through the international channels of which it is a reference point for our country, announces that the regulatory authority Ukraine (Snsriu) has assessed, on the basis of several years of experience on these fires, as well as on the basis of soil contamination in the exclusion zone, as low the radiological risk, and the Aiea agrees with this assessment. The situation in the other Ukrainian plants, adds Isin, remains unchanged and therefore “overall under control, albeit always taking into account that these plants are in a war zone”. ISIN continues to monitor the situation in Ukraine 24 hours a day thanks to connections with the international network and the national situation thanks to the two detection networks active in our country, the environmental radioactivity surveillance network (Resorad), and the automatic network of monitoring for ready alarm signals. Since the beginning of the war and up to now there have been no anomalies attributable to the events in Ukraine in the surveys of the two networks, as well as no radiometric anomalies have been reported to date by the other European environmental radioactivity monitoring laboratories.
