Michal Dočolomanský was born on March 25, 1942 in the Polish town of Niedzica. As a 12-year-old, he lost his father and his mother raised 10 children alone. Several of Michal Dočolomanský’s siblings also embarked on an acting career. He performed his first theatrical role in the fairy tale Snow Queen at the age of 13. He trained as a car mechanic and devoted himself to gymnastics. In 1964 he graduated in acting from the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava and in the same year he became a member of the Drama of the Slovak National Theater, where he worked until 2008. Among the dramatic characters, for example, he was also part of the dramas of the Nordic authors Henrik Ibsen (Peer Gynt, 1979) and August Strindberg (Jean, Miss Julia 1986). In the production Bockerer (1986), he managed to play up to five characters with the help of a caricature, the most famous of which is perhaps his depiction of Hitler, in which he authentically portrayed a mad and possessed dictator. He was also present in productions of Russian classics. In the psychologically complex character of Smerďakov, the audience could see him in the performance Brothers Karamazovs (1981), Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Veršinin in the tragicomedy Three Sisters (1984) and embodied the main character Kirilov in the theatrical adaptation of the novel Besy (1990). The most famous character of Dočolomanský is the legendary Jánošík from the musical Na skle maľované, which was staged by Karol Zachar in 1974. The success of a work full of Slovak songs and dances is evidenced by more than 640 reruns – in 1980, a television production of this musical was created. The versatile artist also appeared on stage in the musicals Cyrano of Bergerac (Spanish Officer, Second Musketeer, 1967), Watch out for Leon! (Vernon, 1994), or Hello, Dolly! Source: TASR Michal Dočolomanský has established himself in film and television. In 1962, he made his debut in the comedy Trip on the Danube. He gained a bigger role in the ballad Three Chestnut Horses (1966). Director Martin Hollý Jr. he cast it in the film Medená veža (1970), set in an enchanting Slovak nature, also in the social and relationship drama Sin of Katarína Padychová (1973) and in the adventure film Noční jazdci (1981). Another important filmmaker, Andrej Lettrich, gave Dočolomanský an opportunity in the story of the Habj wine family in the film Red Wine (1972). In 1976, Sváko Ragan was not missing in the popular comedy. As the famous American detective Nick Carter, viewers can remember him from the cult comedy Adela Hasn’t Dined Yet (1977). He also used his comedic talent in the role of a noble nobleman in the film Secrets of the Castle in the Carpathians (1981). Both films were shot by the famous Czech director Oldřich Lipský. In January 2004, he was awarded the Actor in the Audience Poll of the Television Screen. In 2007, he received the Ľudovít Štúr Council of the First Class award from President Ivan Gašparovič for extraordinary services in the development of culture and theatrical art. In the same year, he was also awarded the Literary Fund Prize for Lifetime Achievement. After his death, the topic of who the divorced actor lived with two children arose again. According to media reports, television technician Alexander Godo also inherited after him. The actor himself identified him as his partner in a statement for Slovenka magazine a few days before his death. Probably this step of his was also the reason why his long-time colleague and friend Oldo Hlaváček dared to comment on this topic after his death.
