On the initiative of the Worried Mothers, Lucia Szabová and her colleagues handed over a letter to Prime Minister Eduard Heger asking the next European Council to immediately stop the supply of Russian gas and oil. The prime minister is said to be pushing for such a request, but according to the head of diplomacy, cutting is almost impossible. “We consider this attitude to be important, especially in the current situation where we finance the killing of people in a side country from our finances and for our convenience,” she said. “The prime minister reacted positively and promised us that he would push for such a demand very hard and that he stood by it,” she added. According to her, the EU also brings a solution within the Power Europe initiative. “Now it is necessary to target very well in this section the measures that were there before so that we can do it faster. In order to move more quickly to energy security, to use our energy sources faster,” Szabová added. Cutting away from Russian oil altogether is not feasible for Slovakia. There is more and more talk in the Union about energy, as the demand for cutting off their oil is high. There is no consensus in the EU on this, but leaders are increasingly calling for supplies from Russia to be curtailed as much as possible. Active steps have already been taken in some countries. Russia has historically had the highest revenue from gas and oil supplies since the beginning of the war and is financing them. “It is calculated that if nothing changes, Russia’s revenues will reach 100 billion euros. This is one third of the frozen assets of the Russian central bank,” Korchok said. At the same time, however, it is not feasible for some countries, including Slovakia. Slovakia is highly dependent on Russian gas and oil. “Slovakia supports reducing its dependence on oil, but wants it to be a step that will be sustainable and managed,” the minister said. He added that it was difficult to take major action in this area if nothing had been done in the last 15 years to reduce supplies from Russia. At the same time, the minister explained that at Thursday’s (March 24) EU summit, leaders will talk about the disconnection of other Russian banks from the SWIFT system. Other Russian oligarchs, along with their family members, should be included in the sanctions list. According to Korčok, there is also a ban on mooring Russian ships in EU ports and a ban on trading in precious metals, including gold and diamonds, is being considered. “Part of our effort is to stop funding this aggression,” he said.
