Mathieu Kassovitz did not manage to hold back his tears on the set of BFMTV, Thursday March 17, 2022. A few days after returning from Ukraine, he remains very marked by what he saw there. He made heartbreaking confidences. Mathieu Kassovitz could not sit idly by. As soon as he learned of Vladimir Putin’s decision to attack Ukraine, he felt the need to intervene in his own way. That is why, together with the artist and his friend JR, he traveled to Lviv, a Ukrainian city located just a few kilometers from the Polish border. Both inaugurated a giant fresco representing the horror of this war. “It represents a little girl who plays and laughs to remind everyone that there are children there,” he explained. Only a few hours after his return to France, the director was on the BFMTV set, Thursday March 17, 2022. Facing Brusse Toussaint, he took the time to explain all the horror he saw on the spot. A traumatic experience for the director who failed to hold back his tears. “I am the son of a refugee, my father lived…”, he began before being stopped by his emotions which took over. He was no longer able to speak. After several long seconds, he managed to resume his story. Mathieu Kassovitz was marked by the horrors he saw “My father lived 39/45, he was the age of these Ukrainian children when my grandparents were deported.
