By 14.20 Moscow time (12.20 CET), a total of 1,103 demonstrators were detained in more than 35 cities, according to OVD-Info data. According to the group, Russian police have detained 9,472 people protesting against the attack on their western neighbor since Russian troops attacked Ukraine on February 24.

In Moscow, any demonstrations or public gatherings of citizens are officially banned due to the coronavirus pandemic. On Friday, Moscow authorities rejected requests from opponents, as well as supporters of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, who wanted to organize marches in the capital and express their views on current events.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced early Thursday morning that the Russian army had launched a “special military operation” in Ukraine.

The Russian Federal Telecommunications, Information Technology and Mass Media Supervision Service (Roskomnadzor) subsequently ordered the Russian media to remove reports calling Russia’s military operation in Ukraine an “attack, invasion or declaration of war” with the proviso that otherwise they risk being blocked and fined.
