Any country that declares a no-fly zone over Ukraine will be directly involved in the armed conflict with Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday. TASR reported on the basis of a report from AFP.

“Any move in this direction will be considered by the country’s participation in the armed conflict,” Putin said during a meeting with employees of the Russian airline Aeroflot.

The head of the Kremlin also added that he did not plan to introduce martial law in Russia.

“Martial law should only be introduced in cases of external aggression (against Russia) … this is not happening at the moment and I hope it will not,” Putin said.

On Friday, NATO rejected calls from Ukrainian officials to establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine. However, Western allies have warned Putin against new sanctions if he does not stop the war in Ukraine.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said his Alliance would not intervene in the conflict for fear of a direct clash with Moscow that could escalate into a wider conflict.
