Trains heading in the opposite direction, from Finland to Russia, are almost empty.

The Finnish railway operator is strengthening the train connection on the Helsinki – St. Petersburg line, as it registers the growing interest of Russians in leaving their homeland.

On Saturday, Finnish television Yle reported that “thousands of people” had arrived in Finland on high-speed Allegro-class trains and buses serving the 400-kilometer route between St. Petersburg and Helsinki.

A spokesman for the state-owned railway company VR Group said it would try to send reinforcements “in the next few days”. He added that trains from Finland to Russia “are practically empty”.

According to the DPA, many incoming Russians fear that Russian President Vladimir Putin could completely close Russia’s borders and declare martial law in the country, which would be another blow to the hard-pressed Russian opposition and dissent.

However, Putin declared on Saturday that he did not currently plan to declare martial law or a state of emergency in Russia.

Russia and Finland share a border of about 1,300 kilometers, the DPA added.
