Boy Scouts pay $ 850 million to sexual abuse victims

The Boy Scouts of America have reached a $ 850 million deal to close the case of sexual abuse complaints by thousands of former members of the youth organization. The settlement, filed with the Bankruptcy Court of Delaware, constitutes the largest compensation for child sexual abuse in American history. A year ago, America’s Boy Scouts filed for bankruptcy in the face of tens of thousands of sexual abuse complaints: over 84,000 people reported abuses dating back to the 1960s. About 60,000 will actually receive the compensation, which will be about $ 14,000 for each applicant, according to USA Today estimates. The Boy Scouts in their bankruptcy filing last March said they intended to sell dozens of Norman Rockwell’s paintings and stocks in the energy sector in 17 states in order to pay compensation to victims of sexual abuse.
