KIEV / MOSCOW, Feb 28 (TASR) – Monday’s peace talks between Russia and Ukraine on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border are over. Delegations from both parties will return to their main posts for further consultations before the second round of negotiations. TASR reports on the basis of Sky News and AFP reports.

“Delegations are returning to their main posts for consultation and discussed the possibility of meeting soon in the second round of negotiations.” said an adviser to Ukrainian President Mykhailo Podoljak, who took part in the talks.

According to CNN, Podoľak also stated that both “The parties have identified a number of priority themes on which certain decisions have been indicated.”

The Russian side has also confirmed its willingness to continue negotiations. “We have agreed that negotiations will continue,” said the head of the Russian delegation, Adviser to Russian President Vladimir Medinsky.

Putin published the terms

During a phone call with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that recognition of Russian sovereignty over the Crimean peninsula and demilitarization of Ukraine were a condition for the fighting in Ukraine. “Vladimir Putin said the agreement was only possible if Russia’s legitimate security interests were unconditionally taken into account, including recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea, demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, and ensuring its neutral status.” the Kremlin said in a statement.

According to the French president’s office, the leaders talked for about 90 minutes, and during a phone call, Macron reiterated to Putin the demands of the international community to stop the Russian offensive in Ukraine.

The French president also called on Putin to stop the attacks on the civilian population by the Russian army, to maintain civilian infrastructure in Ukraine and to ensure safe access to key arteries, especially those south of Kiev.

“President Putin has reaffirmed his willingness to commit to these three points.” Macron’s office said in a statement.

According to CNN television, Macron called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after a call with Putin.

Talks between Ukraine and Russia have begun

Negotiations between representatives of Russia and Ukraine began near the Belarus-Ukraine border on Monday, declaring that it would ask “immediate ceasefire and withdrawal of troops from the territory of Ukraine”.

The Kremlin said it would not announce its official position before talks with the Ukrainian delegation, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, according to AFP.

A member of the Russian delegation, former Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky, told BelTA that “We are certainly interested in reaching some agreements as soon as possible. These agreements should certainly be in the interests of both parties.”
