Vladimir Klitschko called on the democratic world to help stop Russia’s war against Ukraine immediately. “Friends, spread it among your English-speaking acquaintances. The whole world – in all possible ways – must focus its efforts to end this war!”
Challenges to Putin are stronger in Russia
Calls for Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt the military operation against Ukraine are also growing in Russia. The DPA agency informed about it on Saturday. “We, Russian doctors, nurses and paramedics, are strongly opposed to attacks by Russian troops on Ukrainian territory,” cited in a petition with more than 300 signatures.

Dozens of Russian humanitarian organizations have released an open letter to Putin asking him to end the war. “War is a humanitarian catastrophe that leads to pain and suffering … We consider violent solutions to political conflicts to be inhumane and call on you to stop firing and start negotiations.” stated in the document.

In Russia, more than 2,000 people have been arrested for participating in anti-war demonstrations in Ukraine since Thursday. Russian authorities prefer the term “military operation” and are taking action against the use of the term “war” in the media, writes the DPA. For several days now, foreign television stations have been blocked in a large residential and office complex in the center of the Russian capital Moscow, where a number of diplomats and foreign correspondents, as well as Russian officials, live and work. The building operator attributed the failure to satellite systems and, as a replacement, suggested activating Russian state stations instead.
Putin justified the war and Ukraine by saying that he wanted to disarm the country seeking membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and free it from the “neo-Nazi” government there, the DPA recalls. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Putin of unprecedented aggression and declared resistance. At the same time, Zelensky thanked a number of prominent Russian artists, intellectuals and people working in the media who openly spoke out against the war.
Turkey and Lithuania
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Chavushoglu asked his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov during a telephone conversation on Saturday to end the Russian attack on Ukraine. The AFP agency informed about it.
Chavushoglu also reminded that Turkey is ready to be a host country for negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, writes AFP, citing diplomatic sources. Turkish Foreign Minister told Lavrov that further military escalation would not help anyone, he told AFP, citing a source who wanted to remain anonymous.

The source also reported that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, expressed his condolences over the loss of life and wished the injured to a speedy recovery. Ankara has repeatedly called the Russian invasion of Ukraine “unacceptable,” the AFP said. During his January visit to Kiev, Erdogan suggested that Turkey could mediate in resolving the Ukrainian crisis.
Turkey is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). However, it has close economic relations with Russia. The Council of Europe announced on Friday that it was excluding all Russian officials in connection with Moscow’s attack on Ukraine. Turkey abstained. In a television interview late Friday night, Chavushoglu said Ankara “did not want to interrupt the dialogue.”
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda also addressed an urgent call on Russia to stop fighting in Ukraine on Saturday, “even though so much evil has been done”. This was reported by Sky News. In a video posted on the social network Nauseda said: “It’s awful to see what’s going on. It’s awful to see women and children die.” “Churches are being destroyed. What are you fighting for?” the Lithuanian president continued.
“I appeal to you people of Russia. I appeal to you mothers whose sons are sent to die in Ukraine. I appeal to you, soldiers who are fighting in the war who knows why … It is not too late. Even though so much evil has been done, it’s still not too late to stop all this, ” Lithuanian president said on Twitter.
People in several countries express dissatisfaction
Ukrainians living abroad and residents of several countries took to the streets on Saturday to join anti-war rallies. TASR took over the report from AP and DPA. Several Ukrainians living in Japan gathered on Saturday in several places in the capital, Tokyo. Participants in these rallies chanted “Stop the war!” and “Peace of Ukraine!”. They also held banners with inscriptions calling for an end to the war. Some of them waved Ukrainian flags.

People have taken to the streets in other cities to protest the invasion, the DPA writes. Finland shares a border of more than 1,300 kilometers with Russia, so people are watching events in Ukraine with particular concern. On Friday, a Russian government spokeswoman addressed a threat to Finland, saying that if the country joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), it would have “serious military and political consequences”.
