Ezviz C6N 4MP review: a surveillance solution now effective day and night

Just two years ago, the C6N 1080p entered the drafting of Digital. Ezviz’s camera won us over with its features, especially its motion tracking. On the other hand, at the time already, its image quality had disappointed us a little. The C6N 4MP corrects the situation today thanks to a new sensor which, if it increases the price of the camera by ten euros – it is available at the recommended retail price of 50 € -, significantly improves the quality of ‘picture.

By comparing excerpts from recordings made in the best definition available on our test scene, whose oil bottle was replaced by portraits following a tragic accident, the difference is obvious.

In daylight, the scene is much more legible and we can see the facial features much better, but also the embroidery on our square of white fabric. The white balance has also been corrected to provide more natural colors. That said, the contrast is a little more pronounced and the darker elements stand out a little less against the black background. The old model does a little better on this point without excelling. Overall, the 4-megapixel image is therefore much better.

The sensor change is even more visible at night. Our test scene appeared blurry through the C6N’s 1080p infrared vision, while the new model captures a wealth of detail. The cover of the book is perfectly legible and we can also better distinguish the details of our embroidered fabric, as well as the facial features. However, the C6N 4MP pushes the contrast a little too much here again and certain details blend in both dark and light areas. We should also add that the infrared leds favor the center of the scene. The images are thus much darker on the periphery, on both models moreover. In short, the C6N 4MP is not quite at the level of excellent 2K panv&tilt camera of Eufy, but it does much better than the old model and delivers largely usable images.

We were able to see this in our test in real use. The images from the new C6N allowed us to identify a person up to 4.5m away, whereas they had to approach within 3m with the C6N 1080p. In addition, motion detection is a little more effective on the 4 MP version. She spotted us at the other end of our ten-meter-long lab. We were therefore unable to test the limit of its detection system, but it is in any case more effective than that of the old model which had not been able to see us beyond 8 m. The activation of the infrared vision is on the other hand always so slow: 6 s are necessary for the C6N 4MP to react to the lack of light.

If it films up to 2560 x 1440 pixels, the new C6N offers lower definitions like the previous one – 1920 x 1080 px and 768 x 432 px – to save a little space on a memory card. It is also possible to store recordings in the Ezviz cloud for a few euros per month. There are also the same functionalities for monitoring: programming, activity zones, detection sensitivity, alarm and, of course, movement tracking (horizontal only). On the other hand, there is still no intelligent detection (recognition of people, animals, etc.) or audio detection.

The microphone also still lacks sensitivity and struggles to record whispers, even at less than 2 m, but we can note the best side of the siren, the level of which we measured at 85 dB (A) at around 1 Mr. All of the features are still accessible from the Ezviz application, which has certainly seen some updates since our test of the C6N 1080p, but remains overall very close and quite easy to understand.
