From Wednesday afternoon until Friday lunch, ie in less than 48 hours, approximately 7,500 people from Ukraine crossed the Slovak-Ukrainian border. Most had valid documents.

These were mainly women, children and the elderly, as men between the ages of 18 and 60 are not allowed to leave the country due to general mobilization in Ukraine. Many came with children, wives or parents to say goodbye directly to the border.

The usual number of entries to Slovakia from Ukraine before the outbreak was an average of 1400 people per day.

Most people travel further

Slovakia has committed itself to allowing the entry of all people fleeing the war.

“We allow such persons a short stay of up to 90 days. However, when entering Slovakia or later, they have the opportunity to apply for international protection and after approving the amendment to the Asylum Act and government decisions, they will also be able to apply for temporary refuge,” the Ministry of the Interior’s press department said.
