PC, Xbox, PlayStation: Which is the best version of Elden Ring? – Frandroid

Elden Ring has established itself since the publication of the tests as a great masterpiece of video games. Here’s which platform to play it on to make the most of From Software’s magnum opus.

Game of the Decadea stroke of genius, new masterpiece, to say that Elden Ring has conquered the specialized press would be an understatement. The new title from the From Software studio, which will be released this Friday, February 25, 2022, is already one of the best-received games by critics in the history of video games. In other words, it should be a landmark in the industry.

If you know the From Software studio, you won’t be surprised to learn that Elden Ring can also sometimes suffer from some slight technical weaknesses, especially for its release. Fortunately, the first tests on PC, PlayStation and Xbox allow you to get a more precise idea of ​​the game’s performance. If you are still unsure about your platform of choice, this should allow you to see more clearly.

The media DigitalFoundry was able to begin its in-depth testing of the game for each platform. Unfortunately, none offers an ideal level of performance and choices will have to be made.

Xbox: check if your game screen is VRR compatible

On Xbox Series S and X, the game runs at a level between 40 and 60 frames per second whether in quality or performance mode. On Microsoft’s smaller console, Elden Ring is simply going to drop around 40 FPS more frequently than the more powerful Xbox Series X. In any case, this lack of consistency can lead to frustrating results for some players.

Fortunately, Microsoft’s consoles can provide a solution to at least mitigate the problem: compatibility with the VRRWhere Variable Refresh Rate. This technology makes it possible to synchronize the refresh of the image sent by the console and that of the television. If your screen is compatible, it is strongly recommended to activate this function which will allow you to partially erase the frequency variations of the game.

PlayStation: a PS4 version better than the PS5 version?

On the PlayStation side, the Variable Refresh Rate is not supported at this time. We must therefore find another solution, because, here too, Elden Ring varies its frequency between 45 and 60 frames per second on PS5. Digital Foundry notes that on PS5 the game generally runs better than on Xbox Series X, without hitting 60 FPS perfection.

However, the Digital Foundry site has put its finger on an ingenious solution to achieve perfect fluidity: play the PlayStation 4 version. Indeed, unlike what Microsoft offers on Xbox, it is possible to play games on PlayStation 5 in their PS4 versions. Here, it allows the game to run at 60 frames per second on PS5. Obviously this is not done without compensation, in these conditions, Elden Ring offers a lower definition of 1800p maximum, thanks to an upscaling technique, and with a lower graphic quality than the PS5 version of the game.

To play Elden Ring at 60 frames per secondthe best (and only) solution when it comes out and playing the PS4 version on PS5.

And on PC? Better version in the making

Usually, you can count on the extra power of high-end PCs to achieve a level of graphics quality and flawless performance. In the case of Elden Ring, unfortunately this will not be the case yet. With patch 1.02 of the game, Digital Foundry detected many small performance issues. For example, the game has some slowdowns on the first appearance of a visual effect, an enemy or a new area. At the other appearances of these elements, the media notes that the performance problems disappear. We can also mention a performance issue when changing areas, which can skip a few frames per minute or drop the fluidity of the game from 60 to 40 frames per second.

The media points to the use for the first time by From Software of the DirectX 12 API which makes it possible to develop games ” closer to metal ie with a higher level of optimization requested and allowed. Other DX12 titles have suffered from these kinds of problems. Hopefully they will be fixed with later patches. If so, the PC version of the game might just end up being the best performing on paper.

The website Rock Paper Shotgun was able to compare the game with the graphics settings at maximum and minimum, both at 2560 x 1440 pixels. The difference in terms of image quality does not seem to be obvious between the two versions. We can especially note a better management of shadows and a better display of details on the distance with the version at maximum.

Which version of the game to choose?

If you have the luxury of being able to choose between the PC, PlayStation, or Xbox version of Elden Ring and are hesitating, here are our recommendations.

If you’re desperate to maximize performance, we recommend playing the PS4 version of the game on a PlayStation 5.

If you rather want to focus on image quality without sacrificing performance too much, and you have a recent VRR compatible TV, then the Xbox version seems to be preferred.

Finally, the PC version seems the most greedy and the least refined of all in the state, but it is the one that could best be refined over time.
