KIEV / MOSCOW – Fyodor Smolov is the first Russian footballer to speak out against the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Thursday. Thirty-two-year-old finisher Dinama Moskva wrote in a post on the social network Instagram under a blank picture with a black background “No war”.
Russian ground forces began entering Ukrainian territory in the early morning hours on Thursday. Tanks and other heavy equipment crossed the border in several northern regions and in the south of the Ukrainian Crimean peninsula.
Several Ukrainian footballers have also expressed their cohesion with their country. Oleksander Zinchenko told the British media that Instagram had deleted his post against Vladimir Putin, in which he addressed harsh words to the Russian president.
Brazilian footballers from Shakhtar Donetsk, Ukraine, and Dynamo Kyiv have asked for help in escaping from the country in a video on the social network Twitter. “The situation is desperate. Please release this video to get it to the government. The borders are closed, there is no fuel, soon there will be no food or money.” said in the video Junior Moraes, Shakhtar Donetsk striker. The Brazilian native is already a representative of Ukraine, for which he played 11 matches and scored one goal.
