Can harsh sanctions stop Vladimir Putin’s imperial ambitions? According to observers, this is not at all certain. Many countries have gone to everything in an effort to deter Putin from moving forward.

EU: Sanctions against officials and banks

Brussels was set to adopt a comprehensive package of sanctions on Tuesday, affecting Russian officials who helped recognize the independence of Ukraine’s pro-Russian separatist republics, as well as Russian banks that fund Russian military adventures in the territories. The EU also plans to limit Kremlin officials’ access to EU financial and capital markets.

Germany: Suspension of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline

So far, the toughest sanction for Putin has been Germany, which has stopped approving the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. “The inviolability and immutability of the borders, as well as the sovereignty of the states, are the foundations of our post-war order,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz responded to the latest Russian attacks.

USA: Two batches of sanctions

The United States decided on Monday to impose sanctions banning trade with entities on the territory of two Ukrainian secessionist republics, which Moscow is now trying to take control of, as well as financing any related projects. Washington should add a second batch of sanctions on Tuesday, which should go even further.

UK: Freezes bank assets

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced an asset freeze to five Russian banks and three businessmen close to the Kremlin. London calls it the first batch of sanctions, and others are set to proceed if Russian troops dare to move forward.
