Underbelt for America: Tensions escalate in Ukraine stock market – NEW TIME

The US stock market weakened on Tuesday after Russia sent troops to separatist regions in eastern Ukraine, continuing an escalation of tensions. However, the US market has previously retreated from its peak on January 3.

The reason was the uncertainty about the impact of the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) decision to end the policy of extremely low interest rates and withdraw further economic stimulus.

The S&P 500 index lost one percent and closed at 4,304.76 points. Compared to its January maximum, it has lost more than 10 percent so far. The Dow Jones industrial index fell 1.4 percent to 33,596.61 points. The Nasdaq technology fell 1.2 percent to 13,381.52 points, and the Russell 2000 Small Business Index fell 1.5 percent to 1,980.17 points.

However, Asian stock markets picked up on Wednesday. The Shanghai Composite China Index rose 0.9 percent and the Hong Kong stock index Hang Seng improved 0.6 percent. The Japanese stock market did not trade for the public holiday.
