An original gesture carried by the LR mayor of Cannes David Lisnard because for him “sponsorship is not worth support”.

POLICY – The gait is not common. This Sunday, February 20, the mayor LR of the city of Cannes has chosen to help the candidacy of Jean-Luc Melenchonwho still lacks a certain number of sponsorships for the 2022 presidential election.

By “civic concern” and “democratic requirement”, David Lisnard chose to give its sponsorship to the candidate of France Insoumise which has only 370 in the last count of the Constitutional Council. A not trivial gesture for this political personality anchored to the right of the political spectrum.

“Three of the main presidential candidates have not received their sponsorships. If Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Marine Le Pen or Eric Zemmour could not present themselves, it would be a serious attack on democracy (…) the candidate that I support Valérie Pécresse, has about 2000 sponsorships. She can therefore compete and I am delighted about it”, explains in a video posted on Twitter the one who is also President of the Association of Mayors of France since November 2021.

“But I think that we must take an initiative to show that sponsorship is not worth support and that we must ensure democratic and republican free expression”, he justifies to detail his “personal initiative”.

An approach in favor of Jean-Luc Mélenchon defended by David Lisnard even though he assumes to fight “ardently his convictions, his ideas and his values”. Discrepancies which should not prevent the candidate from rebellious France to “be able to compete”, when he is the candidate from whom he is furthest away, in his own words.

Moreover, by this gesture David Lisnard hopes to train other mayors and all elected officials capable of providing sponsorship on the same path without having to undergo what he describes as “unfair pressure”. For the president of the AMF, “all the representative candidates must be able to compete, it is a question of responsibility and civic unity and republican spirit”.
