Algeria: Minister of Finance Aïmene Benabderrahmane appointed Prime Minister

Algerian Minister of Finance Aïmene Benabderrahmane was appointed Prime Minister on Wednesday June 30, following legislative elections on June 12. An appointment which reflects the will of the executive power to curb the serious socio-economic crisis facing Algeria.

“In accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, appointed Mr. Aïmene Benabderrahmane Prime Minister,” the Algerian presidency said in a statement.

“He is responsible for continuing consultations with political parties and civil society to form the government as soon as possible,” the statement added.

Facing the economic crisis

Aïmene Benabderrahmane, 60 years old, succeeds Abdelaziz Djerad, 67 years old, given starting in recent days, who has failed to redress the crisis situation of the first economy of the Maghreb, which is mainly based on oil rent.

In office since December 28, 2019, Abdelaziz Djerad presented his resignation and that of his government on June 24 to President Tebboune, who had entrusted him with managing current affairs.

The head of state thanked his Prime Minister for having led the government “under difficult conditions”, in particular because of the Covid-19 pandemic but he did not hide criticisms against the former Prime Minister, publicly expressing his dissatisfaction with the inaction of the Djerad government last January.
