WARSAW. An extremely strong wind damaged buildings across Poland on Thursday. At least three people lost their lives. The Polish news agency PAP informed about it.

The strong wind that hit Poland on Thursday night caused damage to almost 200 houses and other buildings. The tornado damaged 40 buildings in Wielkopolska alone on Thursday.

According to the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute in Poland, they recorded up to six tornadoes.

“We usually consider tornadoes to be an extremely rare and destructive phenomenon associated with storms – we in turn commonly associate them with flight. However, in addition to storms, tornadoes have occurred in Poland tonight, and six of them have been documented so far, “SHMÚ said on Facebook. According to meteorologists, this points to the fact that it is not necessary for heat to form tornadoes.

“The conditions regarding flow, humidity and thermal stratification are key,” the SHMÚ explained on the social network.

The National Fire Brigade described the damage caused by the tornado in the town of Dobrzyca as “really extensive” and added that firefighters were trying to get the situation under control.

According to the brigade, an extremely strong wind caused damage to buildings in almost every district of the country, but the worst affected area was the west of Poland, writes PAP.

In Krakow, the wind overturned a 30-meter crane, injuring two construction workers. The crane was not used at the time of the accident and there was no one in its cabin, police said. The exact circumstances of the disaster are still being investigated.

On Thursday morning, due to strong winds, two flights to the capital Warsaw – one from the northern city of Bydgoszcz and the other from Krakow – had to redirect to Budapest, sources from the Polish national air carrier LOT told PAP.

Across Poland, firefighters recorded 190 damaged buildings, 54 of which had torn roofs due to the wind. Power outages were recorded in more than 324,000 households and businesses in the morning on Thursday, PAP recalls.
