Russia will not attack Ukraine on Wednesday, says Russian ambassador to the EU TVNOVINY.sk – TVNOVINY.sk

According to him, wars in Europe rarely begin on this day of the week.

Russia’s ambassador to the EU, Vladimir Chizhov, has rejected claims that Russia plans to invade Ukraine, which the United States says could begin on Wednesday (February 16).

“As far as Russia is concerned, I can assure you that no attack will take place this Wednesday. There will be no escalation in the coming week, next week or next month. Wars in Europe rarely start on Wednesday,” Chizhov said in a statement. interview for Wednesday’s edition of the German daily Die Welt, quoted by the DPA.

The US government has warned that the Russian invasion of Ukraine could begin at any time, even before the end of the Winter Olympics, which are currently taking place in Beijing and end on February 20.

Chizhov objected to these claims. “When you make accusations – especially very serious accusations against Russia – you also have a duty to present evidence. Otherwise it is slander,” he said.

At the same time, the Russian ambassador again called on the West to take Russia’s security concerns seriously. “When our partners finally listen to our legitimate concerns, the process of easing tensions will not take long. It would be in the interests of all Europeans from Lisbon to Vladivostok, but also other countries around the world,” Chizhov added.

In recent weeks, the West has been worried that Russia will invade Ukraine because it has gathered more than 100,000 troops at its borders and launched mass military exercises, which have also taken place in Belarus.

Moscow has denied plans to attack Ukraine, with Washington even announcing a specific date for the attack – Wednesday, February 16. Tensions between Russia and the West have escalated to a maximum.

However, Moscow announced on Tuesday that it was withdrawing some of its troops from Ukraine’s borders because their maneuvers were over and they were leaving for their bases.

At a press conference on Tuesday (February 15), US President Joe Biden said that the United States had not yet verified Russia’s allegations that it had begun to withdraw its troops from near the Ukrainian border. According to the head of the White House, it is still “possible” that Russia will attack. At the same time, however, he hopes that the crisis can still be resolved through diplomacy.
