Four-year-old girl found alive two years after her abduction, police say

(CNN) — A New York girl who was first reported missing in 2019 when she was four years old was found alive by police Monday, according to a news release from the Saugerties Police Department.

In the summer of 2019, Paislee Shultis was reported missing from Tompkins County, New York, and was initially believed to have been abducted by her non-custodial parents, Kimberly Cooper and Kirk Shultis Jr., according to the news release.

On Monday, police received a tip that Paislee was “inside a concealed location” at a home in Saugerties, New York, and obtained a warrant to search the home. More than an hour after searching the home, police found Paislee and Kimberly Cooper in a “makeshift room, under a locked staircase that led to the basement” of the home in a “dark, damp room,” according to police.

Paislee was then taken to police headquarters where she was found to be in good health and released to her legal guardian, police say.

Kimberly Cooper, 33, Kirk Shultis Jr., 32, and Kirk Shultis Sr., 57, were arrested and charged as a result of the investigation. Cooper faces charges of Custodial Interference in the Second Degree and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, while Shultis Jr. and Shultis Sr. face charges of felony Custodial Interference in the First Degree and misdemeanor for endangering the welfare of a child, according to police.

CNN has not been able to identify attorneys for the three people or reach out to the defendants and other family members for comment.

Cooper, Shultis Jr. and Shultis Sr. were arraigned in the Saugerties People’s Court of Justice. Cooper was booked into the Ulster County Jail and the Shultise’s were released on parole, according to the news release. The court ordered all three defendants to stay away from Paislee.

This is not the first time clues have led police to the home Paislee was discovered in on Monday, police say.

“Unfortunately, on each occasion the residents denied any knowledge of the girl’s whereabouts,” the Saugerties Police Department said in the news release. “During some of the follow-ups to the Fawn Road location, both Kirk Shultis Sr. and Jr. granted authorities limited access to the residence to search for the girl, both officers entered the home, knowing that the girl and her abductor were hidden inside the house and would not be found.

The investigation into Paislee’s kidnapping is ongoing and “additional arrests are pending,” according to police.
