The anti-sanitary pass demonstration was marked by numerous acts of vandalism committed by a hundred people dressed in black and masked. Clashes between demonstrators and police were still continuing at the end of the afternoon.
The black blocks, these small groups distinguished by violent actions, were invited to the anti-sanitary pass demonstration, this Saturday, February 12, in downtown Montpellier. About 2,500 people had gathered by early afternoon on the Place de la Comedie.
They quickly took the lead of the parade, at 2:40 p.m., causing the first incidents in front of the prefecture. Their throwing of various objects provoked jets of tear gas from the police.

Their city tour continued with numerous damages: broken windows, burnt garbage cans. The violence culminated in rue de Maguelone, where the doors and windows of two banks, BNP Paribas and SMC, were kicked in and smashed.
The police then arrived in large numbers in front of the Opéra Comédie, pushing back the troublemakers with the help of numerous jets of tear gas.
The situation was still very tense around 4 p.m. Some of the demonstrators went up rue de la Loge towards the Arc de Triomphe where jets of tear gas resumed.
