The French in a situation of over-indebtedness are less numerous, women always more concerned than men – franceinfo

The French are less and less affected by over-indebtedness. But women are still more affected than men, according to a survey published by the Banque de France, Monday, February 7.

Women alone or with a dependent child represent 54% of over-indebted people between 25 and 54 years old. According to the institution, this majority of women is explained by lower salaries than men, and the greater number of single mothers. The survey, which focuses more broadly on the characteristics of over-indebted people, recalls that more than half of them are separated, single or widowed, men and women alike. More than a quarter are also unemployed.

In total, the number of over-indebtedness files filed last year, however, fell by 15% compared to 2019, with 120,968 files. The overall debt of over-indebted households is also down, to 4.9 billion euros in 2021, or 1.2 billion euros less than in 2019. “The health crisis has not called into question the downward trend in over-indebtedness that we have seen since 2015”welcomes the Banque de France, even if it notes “a small increase in the filing of over-indebtedness files by young people” between 18 and 32 years old.
