Police Identify 5 People Killed in New Mexico Hot Air Balloon Crash

(CNN) – Authorities in Albuquerque, New Mexico, identified the five victims of the Saturday’s fatal crash in a hot air balloon.

In a press release this Sunday, New Mexico State Police identified the pilot as 62-year-old Nicholas Meleski and 65-year-old passenger Susan Montoya.

John Montoya, 61, was taken to a hospital and died of his injuries, according to the statement.

All of the victims were from Albuquerque, police said. The city is a very popular place to fly a balloon and hosts the International Balloon Festival every fall.

CNN previously reported that retired Albuquerque police officer Martín Martínez, 59, and his wife, Mary Martínez, 62, were killed in the accident. Mayor Tim Keller named them at a news conference Saturday.

The accident occurred around 7:30 am local time on Saturday, police said.

New Mexico police said the initial investigation determined that the balloon collided with an overhead power line as it descended toward the ground. The basket was engulfed in flames.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the incident, as reported by CNN.
