Derek Chauvin, a 45-year-old former Minneapolis police officer, was sentenced Friday to 22 years and six months in prison for the murder of George Floyd, of which he was convicted on April 20.

“The court sentences you to detention for a period of 270 months, which is ten years more than the sentence” provided for by the Minnesota scale, said Judge Peter Cahill, 13 months to the day after the death of the black forty-something in Minneapolis.
“My decision is not based on emotion or sympathy”, “nor on public opinion,” he added. “I’m not trying to send a message.”
