Amazon and Google, investigation into false reviews in GB

In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced today that it has opened a formal investigation into Amazon and Google expressing fears that the two giants have not done enough to combat the spread of fake reviews on their sites. The CMA said it wanted to gather more information to determine if the two companies may have violated consumer law by taking insufficient measures to protect shoppers from fake reviews. In May 2020, the UK Antitrus had opened a first investigation to assess the internal systems and processes of different platforms to identify and manage fake reviews. If a violation of the rules were to emerge, the CMA could ask for formal commitments from companies to change the management of fake reviews or provide for legal action, if necessary. At the moment, the Cma explains, however, no conclusion has been reached on possible violations.
