Popular primary: the ballot has started, more than 460,000 registered voters can vote – Le Monde

After several months of preparation, it’s D-day for the popular Primary. Since 10 a.m., Thursday, January 27, the 467,000 or so registered for the nomination of a candidate for the left for the presidential election can vote. The ballot is different from that usually chosen during political elections, since each voter is invited to give his opinion on all the candidates.

This ballot will be in a single round, “majority judgment”, that is, voters must rate and rank candidates by answering this question: “To win ecology and social justice in the presidential election, I believe that each of these personalities would be…” They must award each candidate a mention: “Very good”, “Good”, “Fairly good”, “Fair”, “Insufficient”. The same mention can be used for several candidates.

The personalities who are presented for the nomination vote are: Anna Agueb-Porterie (from civil society), Anne Hidalgo (Socialist Party), Yannick Jadot (Europe Ecologie-Les Verts), Pierre Larrouturou (Nouvelle Donne), Charlotte Marchandise (from civil society), Jean-Luc Mélenchon (La France insoumise) and Christiane Taubira (supported by the Radical Left Party). They all obtained the sufficient number of citizen sponsorships during the candidate pre-selection stage in October. M^me Hidalgo, Messrs. Jadot and Mélenchon have several times expressed their wish not to appear in this vote to which they do not condition their candidacy.

Voting for the primary, which will take place online, will close on Sunday at 5 p.m.; the result made public around 6:30 p.m. The 466,895 people registered in the primary are the only ones who can vote.

“The personality best appreciated by a majority wins the election”, explained the organizers. But, to receive the nomination and the militant support of the popular Primary, the winner must commit to “include [au minimum] the spirit of Common ground in his program and to “encourage unity” with the other candidates. Otherwise, the People’s Primary will not support anyone.
