British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced in parliament on Tuesday that Russia would face unprecedented sanctions if it invaded Ukraine.
The AFP agency informed about it. According to Johnson, the Western Allies “on any Russian attack on Ukraine they will respond in unison by imposing coordinated and severe economic sanctions, tougher than have ever been imposed on Russia. ” He stressed that in the event of a Russian attack on Ukraine, Britain would contribute to a possible “new deployment of NATO forces” in order to protect its allies in Europe, Sky News quoted him as saying.
According to Johnson, Russia “put its weapon to the head of Ukraine”, which has “a full moral and legal right to defend itself”. He expressed concern that in the event of a Russian invasion, “the bloodshed would be comparable to the first war in Chechnya or Bosnia or other conflicts that Europe has experienced since 1945.”
He added that the United Kingdom has been working with the United States and European allies for several months to prevent an armed conflict between Moscow and Kiev through dialogue and under threat of sanctions.
On Monday evening, Johnson took part in a video call on the Russian threat to Ukraine with representatives of the United States, the EU, NATO, Italy, Poland, France and Germany. During a video conference, US President Joe Biden confirmed his willingness to meet again with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin.
