Šimečka was elected Vice-President of the European Parliament – SME.sk

STRASBOURG, BRATISLAVA. On Tuesday, the Slovak MEP became one of the fourteen Vice-Presidents of the European Parliament Michal Šimečka.

The nominee of the liberal faction Let’s Recover Europe was elected by the deputies in the second round of voting in the plenary session in Strasbourg. The 39-year-old MP for Progressive Slovakia is the first Slovak in this position.

An active newcomer

The vice-presidents of the parliament also share tasks according to political power. The Vice-President may, for example, be in charge of civil petitions, external communication or parliamentary deliberations with the Commission and the Council. In addition, he chairs plenary sessions.

Šimečka is only the first term in the European Parliament, but she is one of the relatively active members, and a year ago he was elected Vice-President of the Liberal Group.

He became the rapporteur for an important proposal for a new rule of law protection mechanism that has gone through it. This was a politically sensitive issue, especially in relation to Poland or Hungary, which should take away Eurofunds for violating the rule of law.

Change in forehead

The new President of the European Parliament, the current Vice-President, was also decided on Tuesday. Roberta Metsolová, candidate of the People ‘s Group from Malta.

He will be replaced by David Sassoli, a candidate of the European Socialists who died last week.

The European Parliament is in the middle of a five-year term. It is customary for his leadership to change at that time, with the candidates of the two strongest factions taking turns as President of the European Parliament.
