The attempt of Smer-SD President Robert Fico to use the referendum institute repeatedly once to call early elections, then to reject a defense agreement with the United States, according to Bihari, is a transparent way to return to power. She added that the will of the people could not be abused as a tool of political marketing.

Bihari claims that Fico is not telling the truth about the defense agreement with the USA. “I consider asking people about the standard bilateral agreement, which will bring to Slovakia the modernization of airports and increase the country’s defenses, while introducing its content, as a primitive eruption of anti-American sentiments in society and indecent hunting of votes by the former prime minister,” she pointed out.

Tomáš Valášek, a member of the National Council of the Slovak Republic and a member of Progressive Slovakia, also points out that Fico was wrong about the defense agreement. “In an effort to look like a statesman while appealing to anti-American forces, he has repeatedly stated that this treaty has nothing to do with NATO. The opposite is true. It has everything to do with it.” pointed out. According to Valášek, it is pointless to want defense commitments from NATO, but to block practical cooperation with the most important ally.

The government approved the conclusion of a defense cooperation agreement with the United States last week. Once the document is signed, it has yet to be approved by parliament. Ratification by the President is also needed. The agreement would allow the US Armed Forces to use the Malacky-Kuchyna and Sliač military airports, or other agreed facilities and premises. It should be valid for ten years. It then remains valid or can be terminated with one year’s notice.
