Honor 50 Lite test: a smartphone that’s a little too light – Les Numériques

Like the Nova 8i, the Honor 50 Lite is equipped with a dorsal photo block with four sensors. The first, with its wide-angle lens (f / 1.9), displays 64 megapixels and produces 16 Mpx shots based on the pixel binning. It also combines it with an 8 Mpx sensor with ultra-wide-angle optics (f / 2.4) and two 2 Mpx sensors each, one dedicated to macro, the other to measuring the depth (optics f/2.4). A paraphernalia already seen during the test of the Huawei smartphone.

Our tests show that the Honor 50 Lite fails to do better than the Nova 8i and falls behind its competitors. If the colorimetry of our test scene captured during the day is less yellow than with the Vivo Y72, it is clear that it is at the cost of significant smoothing and a lack of contrast. The colors are bland and the outlines of small elements lack precision.

The difficulties in processing the images are even more visible in the case of night scenes. Between smooth textures, digital noise and color desaturation, this smartphone is clearly struggling.

64 MP mode

The settings of the Honor 50 Lite hide in the More section, then the High resolution option, enough to capture images in maximum quality. This choice pays off when the brightness is sufficient, as evidenced by our test scene. The details of the cartography, for example almost entirely smoothed in 16 Mpx, then reappear.

At night, on the other hand, the switch to 64 Mpx does not make it possible to find the sum of details that disappeared in the battle. It is therefore better not to use this mode and save the (non-expandable) storage space of the smartphone.

Ultra wide-angle module: 8 Mpx, eq. 14mm, f/2.4

The secondary module of this 50 Lite is not comfortable, even during the day. The smoothing that he concedes makes a good number of details disappear, and there too the colors lack liveliness, even if we note that the reflections on the playing cards have the merit of being almost absent. We would have liked more contrast. These defects visible in the center of the image are even more so in the periphery, where significant distortion is added.

The night does not succeed better for this module which then combines under-exposure and significant digital noise, not to mention the distortion. It is therefore difficult to use the snapshots of the smartphone when the light is not there.

Front and video module

On the front, the Honor 50 Lite is adorned with a 16 Mpx sensor (f / 2 wide-angle optics). This admittedly high definition module, however, concedes significant smoothing and relies heavily on skin embellishment options that make the natural shots lose. On the front and back, the minimum service is provided in terms of video since it is possible to film in 1080p at 30 fps, without stabilization.
