MELBOURNE – Australian Open organizers have expressed deep regret over the impact of Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic’s case on other players in the season’s inaugural grand slam tournament.

“It’s a lesson for us in the future. As an entire Australian tennis family, we realize that recent events have been an undesirable distraction for everyone. We deeply regret the impact this has had on all players.” The governing organization Tennis Australia said in a statement.

Djokovic failed in a federal court in Melbourne on Sunday to appeal against the revocation of his visa, which was ordered on Friday by Australian Immigration Minister Alex Hawke. The leader of the world rankings was deported from the country.
