Samsung formalizes the Exynos 2200 with AMD GPU: why this processor is highly anticipated – Frandroid

Samsung has just formalized the Exynos 2200 designed in collaboration with AMD. This ARM processor will undoubtedly equip the future Galaxy S22. As expected, the graphics part benefits from an RDNA2 architecture with support for ray tracing.

It was just a little delay ultimately, Samsung has good announcement its brand new ARM SoC ahead of the presentation of the Galaxy S22. It’s no business secret: in 2019, AMD announced a partnership with Samsung. The two companies work together in the smartphone sector, the fruit of this collaboration being initially planned for 2021.

AMD at the helm for the graphics part

As a reminder, Samsung is used to on its Galaxy smartphones high-end, to use a home-made Exynos SoC designed by Samsung as well as a chip signed Qualcomm. Depending on the region, you can benefit from either Exynos (generally in Europe) or Snapdragon. the Galaxy S21 Ultra in France is equipped withan Exynos 2100 and not a Snapdragon 888. The differences are generally minimal between these two solutions… except this year.

Samsung unveils the Exynos 2200 created in collaboration with AMD. The American specialist is responsible for bringing his knowledge and expertise for the graphics part of the processor, we benefit from a graphics chip with RDNA 2 architecture. This is the architecture of AMD PC graphics cards, but also of the PS5 and Xbox Series S and X-Series. As we will come back to later, this makes it possible to benefit from the ray tracing native on smartphones.

Unsurprisingly, the Exynos 2200 will be engraved by Samsung using the 4nm EUV engraving process. On the CPU side, these are ARM Armv9 cores, 1 powerful Cortex-X2 core, three balanced Cortex-A710 cores and four Cortex-A510 cores. On this SoC, there is a new NPU for tasks related to artificial intelligence as well as the ISP to take care of photo and video processing.

This ISP can manage sensors up to 200 megapixels according to Samsung, it can also decode 4K video streams at 240 fps or 8K at 60 fps as well as encode a video stream up to 4K definition at 120 fps or 8K at 30 fps . The Korean manufacturer also mentions the possibility of managing two sensors at the same time, a sensor up to 64 megapixels associated with another sensor up to 36 megapixels.

Finally, there is also the 4G / 5G modem, Samsung specifies that we can expect a speed of up to 10 Gbits. Obviously, this is a throughput in a purely theoretical framework if all supported frequency bands are available.

This Exynos 2200 chip has entered production, which makes us say that it will equip the future Galaxy S22. As a reminder, the formalization of the Samsung Galaxy S22 is expected for February 8.

Why this chip can be a game-changer

Graphics performance in the mobile world is far from enjoying big year-on-year increases. The Nvidia Shield and the nintendo-switch, for example, benefit from a Nvidia Tegra X1 SoC announced in January 2015. Yes, you read that right… 2015! This SoC, at the time, already integrated a 2 SMM Maxwell graphics chip with 256 CUDA cores for a total computing power of 1 teraflops. The late 2019 Qualcomm Adreno 650 chip…has an estimated total power of 1.2 teraflops.

This shows how the graphics chips of our mobile devices have not benefited from many innovations in recent years, while we have seen the emergence of smartphones for gamers at Asus (with the ROG Phone 2), Razer (Phone 2), Xiaomi (Black Shark 2 Pro), Nubia (Red Magic 5G)…

In addition, ray tracing can also have a significant impact in the sector. As a reminder, the ray tracing is a new way to create the visual part of games by adding light trajectory management. This allows in particular to create reflections of much better quality and to approach a realistic photo rendering. These are technologies used on our PCs, but also on next-gen consoles.

Note, however, that these technologies must be implemented in games, so there is a lot of work required from the developers. On PC, despite significant investments by Nvidia, few games are still compatible ray tracing. These are usually the most popular new games. As for next-gen game consoles, that’s just happening.

On the Nvidia side, it’s with MediaTek that things move forward. Nvidia will work on ARM MT819x SoCs that will integrate an RTX 30 GPU. This is obviously one of the partnerships that we are closely monitoring in the current context, with Apple, which designs its own ARM chips for iPhone and Mac but also Qualcomm trying to catch up.
