“We have decided to supply Ukraine with light anti-tank defense weapons systems,” British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace told parliament. He also added that the first defense systems arrived in Ukraine on Monday, whereas a small number of British troops will provide training in Ukraine for a short period of time.

Wallace did not specify the exact type of weapons that Britain had sent to Ukraine, but said “these are not strategic weapons” but “self-defense” weapons that “do not pose a threat to Russia.” According to Wallace these are short-range weapons that will become part of Ukraine’s defense mechanism in the event that tanks “invade its territory.”

Many Western countries fear that Russia is preparing a pretext to invade Ukraine. Moscow rejects plans to attack, but said according to Reuters that it can take unspecified military action if the West rejects Russia’s required security guarantees. These include, among other things, the requirement that Ukraine not become part of the North Atlantic Alliance.

Russia’s last week’s talks with the United States and NATO were not groundbreaking, and Kiev asked Western countries to defend themselves, Reuters said. Wallace also said he had invited Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to visit London in the coming weeks to discuss the Ukraine crisis. However, the head of the British Ministry of Defense does not know whether his Russian counterpart will accept this invitation.
