The situation is deteriorating under the Tatras

The situation on the roads in the Tatra and sub-Tatra regions is complicated by wind and heavy snowfall. Marcel Polomský, Director of Road Administration and Road Maintenance of the Prešov Self-Governing Region, stated that so far all roads in the districts of Poprad, Kežmarok and Levoča are passable, but advises drivers to consider driving.

“The snowfall is getting heavier, the wind is very strong, so the roads around which there are no trees are blowing. The third class road between Štrba and Šuňava in the district of Poprad will probably not be passable soon, because it is blowing hard there and it will not be able to keep it in our power, “ Polomský approached the situation. He added that the situation is really very complicated and that drivers should rather stay at home. “It should blow until 6 pm, I believe it will calm down then,” he added.

Drivers also reported problems on Spišská Magura, on Plavnický Hill or in the High Tatras. There is very poor visibility on the roads, it slips and the road blows. Snowfall complicates the situation in several places

The highest warning against strong winds already applies in the Nitra district

In the Nitra district, there is a risk of a strong wind of the highest, third degree until 6 pm. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) informs on the web that in gusts the wind can reach speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour.

“This speed poses a great danger to human activities,” meteorologists warn. The SHMÚ issued a warning against the wind on Monday for the entire territory of the Slovak Republic. The increased second-level warning is valid until 9 pm for the area of south-western Slovakia, and also for the districts of Poprad and Brezno until midnight.

Firefighters recorded 70 trips to the wind

A strong gust of wind, which hit the territory of Slovakia, on Monday required an increased number of trips by members of the Fire and Rescue Corps (HaZZ). By 18.30, they made 70 trips, with dozens of them still intervening, said Katarína Križanová from the communication department of the HaZZ Presidium.

She stated that the most serious situation is in the Bratislava and Trnava regions. In both regions, firefighters intervened 19 times. “In the Nitra region they intervened 12 times and in the Žilina region their help in connection with the elimination of the consequences of strong winds was needed in 11 cases,” she added.

The assistance of firefighters, including members of voluntary fire brigades, concerns in particular the removal of fallen trees from roads and parked vehicles. In several cases, they remove torn roofs. “Departures to similar events are expected to increase.” announced Križanová.

The wind in Nitra had little to do with the storm

The strongest wind in the lower positions during the Monday warnings was recorded in Nitra. “Little was left for his strength to reach the degree of a whirlwind,” pointed out the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) on the social network, commenting on the wind at a speed of 20.8 m / s and 75 km / h, respectively.

“The impacts were strongest in Poprad and Nitra, up to about 100 km / h,” meteorologists added. They said that the wind could still do damage, but in most areas it was already weakening.

During the day, a warning against a strong gust of wind lasted for the entire territory of the Slovak Republic; in the Nitra district, the warning of the highest 3rd degree applied in the early evening.
