In Iran, the first three deaths have been linked to a new, more contagious coronavirus variant, omicron. The DPA agency reported on Sunday with reference to the Ministry of Health.
According to the ministry, a total of more than 1,100 cases of omicron disease have been registered in the country, said Iran’s private news agency Tasnim.
Despite the economic crisis, the government in Tehran allegedly plans to reintroduce severe restrictions on public life in an effort to stop another wave of the pandemic.
Iran, the country hardest hit by the pandemic in the Middle East, registers more than 6.2 million confirmed cases of new coronavirus infection, including 132,000 deaths. In a country of almost 84 million people, more than 60 percent of the population is already fully vaccinated against coronavirus.
