In the Chinese capital, they confirmed the first community transmission of the coronavirus variant omicron. The infected person lives and works in the Haitien district of northwest Beijing and has not been outside the capital for the past two weeks.
The infected person experienced symptoms on Thursday and on Friday the test confirmed that he was infected with COVID-19. Chinese officials informed about it on Saturday.
The community transmission of the omicron in Beijing was thus confirmed less than three weeks before the start of the Winter Olympics in the city and about two weeks before the Lunar New Year celebrations. So far, several Chinese cities have reported omicron, including the city of Tianjin, from which de Beijing’s high-speed train takes only 30 minutes.
Chinese officials are urging the country’s people not to travel during the New Year’s Eve celebrations, but to stay in their cities. China reported 119 new coronavirus infections on Saturday, with 65 infections resulting from community-based transmission. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, 104,864 COVID-19 diseases have been confirmed in the country.
