Former Mauritania President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz imprisoned

Former Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz was imprisoned on the evening of Tuesday, June 22, by decision of the judge in charge of an investigation for alleged corruption in which he was indicted in March, reports to AFP a prosecutor s ‘speaking on condition of anonymity and his party spokesman, former minister Djibril Ould Bilal.

They confirmed his placement under a warrant of committal, without specifying the cause. But this measure comes a few days after the refusal of the former leader to continue to report to the police, as imposed on him by the conditions of his placement under house arrest.

A “settling of accounts”

After more than ten years at the head of this vast Sahelian country in West Africa between 2008 and 2019, the former president continues his descent into hell under his successor Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, his former chief of staff and minister , of which he had however prepared the accession to the presidency.

Mr. Ould Abdel Aziz was indicted in March, along with a dozen high-ranking personalities, for alleged acts of corruption, money laundering, illicit enrichment or even squandering of public property committed during the years when he headed the country.

Mr. Ould Abdel Aziz cries out for “settling of scores” when his successor invokes the independence of the judiciary.
